During the lumber manufacturing process a portion of each log is removed in the form of slabs and edgings, and cut-offs. These pieces of wood drop to the downstairs area of the mill and are taken by conveyor to a chipper. The chipper cuts these larger pieces of wood into small chips that are then used to make various products such as paper of wood pellets. Chippers are therefore a very important piece of equipment in AWP sawmills and require routine maintenance and safety checks.
On January 19, 2023 Gregory True, known as “Chip Doctor” visited the Cowen sawmill to put on a training class for multiple AWP plant managers, supervisors, and other employees. Gregory discussed all aspects of safety precautions, machine set-up techniques, and proper preventative maintenance.
