Various Allegheny Wood Products log buyers, plant managers and log scalers from all sawmills, took part in two separate log grading and scaling classes in early November. AWP Beckley and Norton locations hosted the events and participants came from all sawmill and log yard locations. Identifying different defects in logs and how those defects affect lumber yields, lumber production, and resale log values, as well as reviewing scaling procedures were all part of these events. At the Beckley sawmill location logs were taken into the mill and sawn for participants to see the grade that came from each of the test logs.
VP of AWP Forestry Kelly Riddle explained “this training helps us to be more accurate and consistent in how we grade and scale logs throughout AWP. We do this type of training periodically for our foresters as well so they can take this information and apply it in the field when cruising timber. Everyone who attended thought the training was very good and will help us all in terms of doing our jobs better.”
