AHMI Verified Sustainable

On July 23, 2007 at the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. (AHMI) annual summer meeting the US Forest Service presented a study which verified that the Appalachian Hardwood Forest is increasing and the region-wide hardwood growth to removals ratio is 2.29. This growth to removals ratio means that 2.29 times more wood on average has been grown in the Appalachian Hardwood Region (AHR) than has been removed on an annual basis according to the US Forest Service Study. This review of the Appalachian Hardwood Region was conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture - US Forest Service Southern Research Station Forest Inventory and Analysis program.

Other highlights of the study were (1) the area of timberland in the region has remained stable with an estimated 65.1 million acres in 1990 and 65.4 million acres in 2004, and (2) annual hardwood removals only account for approximately 1% of the total current hardwood inventory in the Appalachian Hardwood Region.

Allegheny Wood Products has a long history of being an advocate of responsible forest management. At AWP we believe that forest land can be managed for long term sustainable timber harvest as well as other uses and be done in a manner that protects all of the resources such as wildlife, vegetation, soil and water which we all share. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines sustainable as “a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged”. As a family owned business with over 60,000 acres of company owned timberland and additional long term supply agreements on over 400,000 acres supplying 5 sawmills, AWP takes forest sustainability very seriously. So it is with great pleasure that we are able to be recognized as a hardwood lumber manufacturer that operates in an area of the United States that has been verified by the US Forest Service as meeting the present needs for forest products without compromising those of future generations.

Allegheny Wood Products is a member of AHMI and operates within the 344 county Appalachian Forest Region covered in the US Forest Service Study. We are delighted to make this information available to you, our valued customer so that you can assure your customers that the lumber you purchase from Allegheny Wood Products does indeed come from a sustainable forest as verified by USDA/US Forest Service data.
